Introduction

Agent Mikhailov Gundyayev, now known as "Patriarch Kirill" of Moscow, is a former employee of the Soviet KGB who spied for the Soviet intelligence agency in the 1970s [1]. He recently extended his congratulations to the leaders of its successor agency [2]—the Federal Security Service (FSB)—on the occasion of Security Services Worker Day in the Russian Federation. Gundyayev's espionage activities are well-documented, with evidence from both Swiss government archives and U.S. intelligence reports [3]. These documents reveal that he was considered a security risk by the French government and was denied multiple entry visas during the 1970s.

Agent Mikhailov, Now Patriarch of Moscow

Under his KGB code name, "Agent Mikhailov," Gundyayev actively participated in Soviet espionage operations while serving as a clergyman of the Sergianist Moscow Patriarchate. This collaboration with the Soviet Union's God-fighting atheistic regime, which murdered thousands of Orthodox Christian laity and clergy, has been widely criticized. Despite this history, on December 20, 2024, Kirill issued a congratulatory letter to the Federal Security Service—the successor agency of the KGB that once persecuted Orthodox Christians. This letter was subsequently published on the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate.
